Effective learners are curious, exploratory, and motivated by new challenges—all key skills strengthened by play. This workshop will focus on the ways in which playful learning is not just for kids, but important throughout our careers, as lifelong learners, teachers, and developers. At the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we ask ourselves daily how to support lifelong learning with interactives, games, apps, videos, and citizen science opportunities. Our approach, no matter what the target age group, centers around, “What makes this fun and engaging? What’s the hook? What challenge follows the hook? What’s the learner’s next step?” In this workshop we’ll explore the ways in which a playful attitude toward learning pays dividends into adulthood and can be a key motivational element for learners of any age.

Bring your favorite educational media for show-and-tell. We’ll save time to discuss what design principles are considered central to developing playful lifelong learning environments.
